The Best Choice
Dr. Edwin Scott was looking for a service that would improve the workflow in the clinic and capture patient information more accurately and efficiently. This desire led him to investigate EMR providers. He researched the options available and recognized that there are many EMR programs available, but few focus on small practices, which require special attention and features.
“You can spend a lot of money on EMR, but MedicWare was the only product providing the full range of features that we need at a price we can afford.” Aside from cost, the level of technical support and access to the company in the long-term was a key factor in determining the best option for the Center for Primary Care.
Family Clinic Needs
Because a family medicine clinic is so heavily based on writing prescriptions, Dr. Scott says the electronic record keeping MedicWare provides has been a huge help. “Paper charts were hard to use efficiently,” says Dr. Scott. “They’re never there when you need them because they’re being routed or on someone’s desk, and they usually didn’t include all the information I needed.” He says that having all prescriptions noted in MedicWare means there is no chance of making some of the mistakes paper charts, with their occasionally missing information, can cause. Also, patients appreciate the readable prescription printouts and can make immediate changes if necessary.
Costs
Dr. Scott based part of his decision to adopt MedicWare on its reasonable cost, but cash has not been the driving force for keeping the service; he says the lifestyle improvements are immeasurable. “We have four doctors, four medical assistants and four to five people in the front office, and all of them can easily access patient records whenever they are needed – no more searching for charts or routing,” says Dr. Scott. “The time savings, accuracy and lifestyle benefits of having MedicWare are phenomenal, and now that we have switched to ASP service we will spend even less on this wonderful support for our business.”
Technology Choices
Dr. Scott originally chose to implement MedicWare’s in-house server-based system in 2000, but the clinic recently upgraded its service to MedicWare EMR Online (MedicWare’s ASP-based system), meaning it is now based on an Internet connection. “We were very happy with the product throughout our experience, but the fact that it was server-based meant we occasionally had server crashes that took us down for hours or even a whole day at a time,” he says. “Since we switched to the online service we’ve had zero crashes and zero downtime, and I would say that switching to the ASP MedicWare service is probably one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.”
